The big talk around town here is the upset win by the MSU Spartans over top ranked Louisville. Up until that major upset, there hasn’t been a buzz around the metro Detroit area about the Final Four.  Now there is several intriguing matchups developing going into this years Final Four!

The North Carolina Tar Heels, everyones preseason number one, have really picked up there level of play after not wining their conference or the tournament playoffs.   The Heels have really pieced things together since with the strong leadership of point guard Ty Lawson.  The ACC giant totally dominated the upstart Sooners from Oklahoma, with the most dominating big man to come from the college ranks since Shaquille O’Neal.   The Tar Heels double and triple teamed Blake Griffin every time he touched the ball and dared the rest of the team to step up and that never happened and the North Carolina Blue is now headed for ‘DetroiRock City’.

The other game and one of the major upsets was MSU over the Cards.   Louisville is an up and down, play it to the max type team, but the Spartans from Lansing slowing the tempo down and playing there famed ‘Midwest Defense’, and systematically mowed down the countries number one team.  Seniors Goran Sutton and Travis Walton lead a defensive stance against a team that put up over a 100 points against Arizona to less then 60 points. The Big Ten regular champions are 27-0 when they hold teams to less then 60 points.

So with the the stars being aligned over the Detroit river, pure sports fans will have a Final Four that will go down as probably the best of all time.   Combatants Villanova versus top ranked North Carolina and Michigan St. against UConn.   Will have fans around the world and from space.   With there eye on the “D”.

We all know that Major League Baseball is under the microscope right now with so many of the top steroids proven to have used performance enhancing drugs.  Some of the most prestigeous records in all of sports are baseball records.  I am more of a football man myself, but even I recognize that numbers in baseball are holly.  You say a number and people know what you are refering to “61″, or “755″ for example…  Both of those have been broken,  and you can not help wonder if they should have been!  The effect that steroid abuse has had onthe record books for Major League Baseball is nothing short of a travisty, and I think that is one reason that they are under the microscope so much.

In the NFL it’s a lot harder to point to one single individuals use of steroids effect on a particular record.  In fact I don’t think that Tom Brady taking steroids would make him a better quarterback,  however if is offensive linemen were using steroids that could help out a lot.

What if we were to fnd out that Emmitt Smith did steroid throughout his career?  Would there be similar outrage that he beat Walter Payton’s record by using performance enhancing substances?  I think that is the only thing in football really that can strike the same kind of chord with the diehard NFL fans.

We’ve known and or suspected a lot of NFL players,  but we don’t typically associate it with any of the fantasy football skill position super stars.  David Boston was obviously a steroid freak, and look were it got him.  Normally when we think of steroids we think of defensive players, I mean go back to the days of Lyle Alzado and John Matuzak,  to Bill Romonowski, to Shawne Merriman who was suspended for using steroids.   We’ve knows it’s there, but again it’s never tarnished any Holly Grail of the sport the way it’s effected baseball, and I can not imagine aything coming close to the magnitude of this continuing story in baseball.

Jared Allen - MIN:  Consensus #1 on most people’s rankings.  In a division that sports QB’s named Kitna, Grossman and Rodgers…big #69 should have no problem recording double digit sacks.

Jared Allen - MIN:  Consensus #1 on most people’s rankings.  In a division that sports QB’s named Kitna, Grossman and Rodgers…big #69 should have no problem recording double digit sacks.

Patrick Kerney - SEA:  Kerney is in the same mold as Allen.  They both have non stop motors and never take plays off.  Look for Kerney to duplicate his numbers from last season.

Mario Williams - HOU:  A defensive lineman on the rise.  After 2008 we might be talking about super Mario as the top DL, for now, he’ll have to be happy with #3.

Aaron Kampman - GBP:  Yet another hard worker that doesn’t get enough credit.  He’s put together back to back great campaigns.  Look for him to add a third.

Kyle Vanden Bosch - TEN:  Tennessee’s go to guy on the defensive front.  Vanden Bosch’s numbers will probably mimic what they were last season.  If Kearse is rejuvenated in TEN, Bosch’s numbers could go up.

Trent Cole - PHI:  Cole has done nothing but improve every year he has been in the league.  There is no reason to believe that trend will not continue.  Cole may not experience the jump in sacks he did last season (from 8 to 12.5) but a 1 or 2 sack improvement is not out of the question.

Jason Taylor - MIA:  Taylor falls to #7 because of his situation.  If Miami commits to Taylor and vice-versa, Taylor moves up into the top 5 as he is still one of the best athletes in the NFL.

Osi Umenyiora - NYG:  How can one of the Giants DL not be in the top 10?  The logical choice is Osi.  He’s a great all around DE.  The great thing about Osi is that he’s capable of putting up a 7 tackles, 4 sacks, FF, INT. game at any point.  He can pick up the slack for an under performing fantasy squad on a given week.

Justin  Smith - SF:  Smith will love the new scenery out west and the 49ers are going to love having him around.  Smith is another high energy guy.  He isn’t most gifted athlete, but he does make up for it in tenacity.  Look for around 70-80 tackles & 10 Sacks.

Derrick Burgess - OAK: Derrick’s numbers have been declining since his first year in Oak.  I look for him to steady his numbers on a much improved defense.  10-13 sacks should not be out of the question.

Julius Peppers - CAR:  A horrible year for Peppers last forced the Panthers staff to make some changes.  One of the changes involves moving Peppers from left end to right end.  Peppers originally played right end in college, so he is familiar with the position.  Something to note is that Peppers new position will put him on right handed QB’s blind side…makes me glad I’m a lefty.

Will Smith - NOS:  Smith’s numbers took a bit of a dip last season.  New Orleans did get better on defense which should help Smith.  Look for Smith to hover around 9-11 sacks.

Aaron Schobel - BUF:  Schobel’s numbers were down last season.  Schobel still ranks as a low end DL1.  He should bounce back to record double digit sacks again.

Tamba Hali - KCC:  Allen is gone and Hali will be the man of the hour.  Kansas City is not expecting him to be Allen, but he needs to perform as a #1 DE should.  Life will be tough without Allen soaking up any double or triple teams, but if Dorsey is as good as everyone thinks, Hali should be fine.

Elvis Dumervil - DEN:  This guy is fun to watch.  5-11, 260 lbs. great speed & one of the best motors in the league.  Look for Elvis to improve on his superb numbers from last season.  Don’t expect great tackle numbers, but his sack numbers could approach

Terrell Suggs - BAL:  Suggs won’t approach double digit sacks, but he has the ability to record 100 tackles.  He will probably be more in the neighborhood of 80-85 tackles an a maximum of 6 sacks.

Justin Tuck - NYG:  Tuck could sneak up into the top 15 or so if Strahan announces his retirement.  For now, I can’t rank him higher than this.  Tuck will still put up good numbers if Strahan returns.  If Strahan retires, Tuck’s tackles could go up by 10 and sacks by 2.

Andre Carter - WAS:  Carter is a solid DL.  Not spectacular, just solid.  I believe his numbers last year were just a tad inflated.  Look for his sack numbers to go to about 8 or 9 and his tackles to be around 55.

Leonard Little - STL:  Last season was a lost season for Little due to injuries.  This season sees the addition of Chris Long and a more experienced Adam Carriker.  Before last season, Little had a great 6 year run.  I expect him to bounce back to his old numbers.  Little probably won’t reach that 14 sack plateau again, but 12 sacks is not out of the question.

Adewale Ogunleye - CHI:  Same assessment as Andre Carter.  I believe Ogunleye’s sacks go down by about 2 and tackles by about 10.

Robert Mathis - IND:  Year in year out Mathis doesn’t receive much hype for the colts, but he’s a big part of the defense when healthy.  Mathis missed a couple of games last season, but still recorded 7 sacks.  If you can steal Mathis as your DL2, you will be quite happy at seasons end.  **Note** Keep an eye on Mathis, he could be moving up my board as 21 seems a little low to me.

Kelly Gregg - BAL:  I really resisted putting a DT on my list, but I can’t ignore Gregg’s numbers.  Since 2002 Greg has averaged 66 tackles & 2.6 sacks per season.  The sacks are not impressive, but the tackles sure are.  4 tackles per game is solid when you are talking about the #22 ranked DL.

Kenyon Coleman - NYJ:  Coleman was the top ranked 3-4 DE last season.  Coleman may not grab many sacks, but he can approach 90 tackles.

Darryl Tapp - SEA:  I believe Tapp keeps his job in Sea. over first round pick Lawrence Jackson.  Playing with Kerney should open things up for Tapp.

Darnell Dockett - ARI:  I have Dockett ranked lower than Coleman for the simple fact that Dockett is in a contract dispute right now.  If Arizona and Dockett can come to terms on a contract one way or another, Dockett moves up at least a few spots.

Search the internet for 2008 NFL draft info an you will undoubtedly find tons of info on Arkansas RB Darren McFadden. Of all that draft info available, one common theme keeps reoccurring. The comparison of McFadden to Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson. These comparisons are making me sick. McFadden hasn’t even been drafted and most speculate that he won’t be the RB that Peterson is.

McFadden isn’t as tough a runner between tackles, he doesn’t have the strength to power through tackles, Peterson has much more upper body power…and so on. Different article, same speculation & observations.

Jamal Lewis had a tremendous rookie campaign totaling 13 starts, 1364 yards and 6 TD’s. The following year was Tomlinson’s draft year. Where was the comparisons that year? Pundits could have easily said that Tomlinson isn’t the between the tackle or cutback runner that Lewis is (not that LT was bad at either one of those). I’m sure people will make the argument that McFadden and Peterson are closer to the same type of player than Lewis and Tomlinson were. That is probably true, but who cares?!?! They are all RB’s in the end and capable of producing yardage and TD’s in the NFL. Does it really matter how they do it? Did a 6 hard yards gained by Emmitt differ from a 6 spectacular looking yards gained by Barry? Better yet…does a series of 3, 9, 8, and 4 yard carries really differ from a 24 yard carry? In my opinion as long as you get the yards, who cares how you get it. Does McFadden’s gains have to be knock down, drag out, tough yards for him to be considered even close to Peterson’s level coming out of college?

HD underworld rise of the lycans download

Bottom line is this…McFadden did everything and then some that Arkansas asked of him. There’s no reason to compare him to Peterson, because he isn’t and will never be Peterson. McFadden will carve out his own path in the NFL. If McFadden’s rookie campaign doesn’t measure up to Peterson’s rookie campaign, then so be it. There’s no reason to consider him any lesser of a RB. Remember, Tiki Barber was also considered a guy that wasn’t a tough runner and was a bit undersized to take the beating an NFL RB has to take. Buffalo definitely thought this and selected Antowain Smith over him in the 1997 NFL draft.

HD dark knight

One more thing…before we start comparing RB’s to Peterson, why don’t we wait until he can put together a full campaign. Not only was this kid a rookie last year, but he only started 9 games & played in 14. I don’t care what kind of astonishing numbers he puts up, it doesn’t mean much to me if he can’t play a full season. Also, let’s see how he responds when his offensive line suffers an injury or two. That will really give us an accurate gauge of his skill level. I’m as big a fan of Peterson as the next guy, but I’m going to curb my enthusiasm for now.

This is my initial post in the music section. I understand that this is mainly a sports blog website, but music is one of my other main loves. In this portion of my site, I’ll share some of my favorite music new & old. I’d love to hear from you on your favorite music or what you think about my music post that week.

My first music post is an indie band that a few of you might know, but most of you probably don’t. Okkervil River is a band mostly out of Austin Texas. Okkervil is probably one of the hardest working bands around. Everything they do is music related one way or another. From tirelessly touring to recording music in stairwells between shows, this band is constantly evolving and improving.

Will Sheff (main vocals, guitar) is the main cog to this finely tuned machine. His voice alone sets the tone for the album this week. Black Sheep Boy is definitely Sheff’s darkest offering to date. After listening to this album, there is no mistaking Sheff’s state of mind at the time of writing this masterpiece.

Tracks to note on this album (although all tracks are stellar)

For Real

Black

No Key, No Plan

Song of Our So-Called Friend

Another Radio Song

Last Love Song For Now

007 quantum of solace HD download

One quick fact about the band: The name “Okkervil River” comes from a story by Tatyana Tolstaya. It is an actual river in St. Petersburg

Well, the 2008 MLB season is underway & one of the preseason favorites is off to a perfect start. The Detroit Tigers have amassed a perfect 0-6 record. Detroit saw their season start with a sweep by the Kansas City Royals followed by a sweep from the Chicago White Sox. What makes the sweeps worse is that both of them took place at Detroit’s home park. So much for home cookin. Detroit has been outscored by 24 total runs in the first 6 games. They have also managed a paltry 2.5 runs per game. All this from an offense that sports multiple .300 or more career batting average players. The Tigers offense should be putting up at least 5 runs a night in their sleep.

What’s wrong with the offense?

Seriously! What is wrong with the Tigers offense?!?! Here’s a few answers. I’ll keep it short because I can’t really say much beyond the Tigers just aren’t hitting the ball. Here’s a list of the Tigers top sluggers and their batting average after 6 games.

M. Cabrera - .111

M. Ordonez - .280

G. Sheffield - .200

P. Polanco - .087

C. Guillen - .400

Carlos Guillen is the only player to show up early in the season. Cabrera started the season with a bang, homering in the first game. Since that point, he has only picked up one hit. That’s just not going to do it for the biggest offseason acquisition. Ordonez has been spotty so far this season. He seems to be a little impatient at this point, jumping on a lot of first pitches. Thank goodness for Guillen, Brandon Inge and the youngster Clete Thomas. These guys have been making very good contact with the ball and is the sole reason that the Tigers have even come close to winning a game this season.

Fear not though Tiger fans. There is some light over the horizon. That light is Curtis Granderson. Curtis is the guy that really sets the tempo for the Tiger hitters. He’s one of the best, if not the best lead off guys in the game. Curtis wreaks havoc on opponents when (not if) he reaches base. He also allows players like Maggs, Sheff, Miguel, Carlos & Polanco to do multiple things once they get up to the plate. Curtis is on the 15 day DL right now. He has just received clearance to start baseball related drills. In other words, he’s being cleared to start swinging a bat. Rejoice!

What about the defense an pitching?

Defense has been mediocre at best. I expect that once the new infielders (Renteria, Cabrerra & Guillen permanently moving to first) start to gell, things will get better. Carlos still doesn’t seem to be totally comfortable at first. He just needs some time to get adjusted. That seems to be the only real problem with the defense thus far.

Pitching is a whole different story. Most of the Tigers starting rotation have looked pretty sharp until they reach that one inning that ends up killing the good outing they were having. Once those starters get pulled, the relief guys just haven’t gotten the job done. The Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya injuries have really hurt the Tigers pitching. Their is a pitching “dead spot” in each game for the Tigers from about the 7th-9th inning. By that, I mean there’s a span of 2 innings where the Tigers have no quality pitching to throw at opponents. Combine this with the fact that the Tigers hitters are giving no run support and there’s no wonder why Todd Jones has had no chance at saving or winning a game.

Rodney and Zumaya are still a ways from returning. Rodney did some throwing the other day, but experienced pain afterwards. That will result in a bit of a setback. Zumaya is a different story. His return is not imminent. Expect his name to start surfacing around mid-season. The loss of these 2 guys for an extended period of time will be the Tigers downfall this year should they not make the playoffs.

Conclusion vinyan divx download

Tiger fans…just keep repeating “it’s a long season, it’s a long season…” 6 games does not make a season. All the star power on the Tigers roster will get their act together sooner rather than later. It’s only a matter of time before Cabrera adjusts to American League pitching. He’s seeing a lot of pitchers that he has never faced before. Their is going to be some growing pains for him. Once he and the rest of the Tigers dial it in, look out American League.

The 2008 NFL draft is finally here. All the predictions & speculation will end today. One of the biggest missing pieces to the puzzle was set in place this week when Jake Long signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins. What else can we expect in the draft today though? Here are a few thoughts;

What’s happening with that #2 pick?

As it stands right now, it looks like the Rams would like to move down & pick up extra players and/or picks. Rumor has it that the Saints are offering the #10 pick & LT Jamaal Brown. Should this be the case, St. Louis will jump at this offer.

**UPDATE**  Reports now say that Chris Long will be selected #2 by the Rams.  I guess the Saints trade rumor was just that…a rumor.  Either the Rams just thought that Long held more value than the trade offer or that trade was never on the table.

Will the Raiders keep the #4 overall pick?

Ahhh…the Raiders. Does anyone really know what the Raiders will do with this pick? I don’t think the Raiders even know what to do with this pick. That is the beauty of an Al Davis run team. Unpredictability! The raiders have a glaring need at defensive line, but probably have a bigger need for extra picks. The next pick after the raiders 1.04 pick isn’t until the 4th round. This team has many holes to fill and even though Long or Gholston will definitely be available, in the end, the Raiders need quantity over quality.

If the Raiders move the #4 pick, where will McFadden go?

McFadden seems to be the forgotten man in the top order of this draft. Names like Sedrick Ellis and Branden Albert have been moving up teams draft board while McFadden’s name seems to be moving up and down daily. My gut still tells me that the Jets are going to somehow land McFadden. They will either move up in the draft to secure him or stay pat & hope he falls to #6.

Who is this years Top WR and where will he go?

In the last couple weeks Devin Thomas has set himself apart just a bit from the other WR’s in this draft. Thomas is a very raw player. This is definitely a high risk/high reward type pick. Of course, most of the WR’s in this draft fall into that category. DeSean Jackson is the only guy that teams know what they are getting when selecting him. KR/PR is a very underrated skill, but at times is solely responsible for whether a team wins or looses. DeSean Jackson could be the next Devin Hester and teams are very intrigued by that. With that being said, teams just won’t be able to pass up what Devin Thomas could end up being. Thomas will have to wait a bit before being picked. I see him going to Philly with the #19 pick. If Philly passes on him, the Bucs won’t let him slip past #20. The Bills may think about Thomas at #11, but that will be the extent of it. To many other good players will be available for the Bills to select Thomas that early.

download transporter 3 HD

Where can I listen to pre or post draft coverage at?

I’m glad you asked. It just so happens that Fantasy Sports Group will be hosting a LIVE webcast starting at 1:00 EST. on Saturday the 26… Today!!!
Each week I will be compiling a list of preliminary positional rankings.  This is a list to help out (or hurt) teams heading into auctions or early drafts.  This week’s spotlight position is QB.  Also, check out our weekly webcast for a more in depth discussion.

Tom Brady - New England:Â Won’t be as good in 2008, but still puts up the best fantasy numbers.

Peyton Manning - Indy:Â Another solid year with or without Harrison.

Tony Romo - Dallas:Â Did not draft a WR as expected, but still has plenty of talent.

Drew Brees - New Orleans:Â New Orleans improved itself in the off-season and Drew’s numbers will show it.

Carson Palmer - Cincy:Â Even without Chad Johnson or Henry, the Cincy offense will still put up a ton of fantasy points.

Derek Anderson - Cleveland:  Has to look over his shoulder a bit. but in the end is his job to lose.  Barring an injury, Anderson should start the whole season.

Donovan McNabb - Philly:  Another draft, another year of not helping McNabb.  Donovan still finds a way to put up good fantasy numbers.

Ben Roethlisberger - Pitt:  Big Ben gets another big weapon in Sweed.  Add in Mendenhall and Ben is looking at a great season.

Matt Hasselbeck - Seattle:  Matt is solid year in, year out.  This year will be no different.

Marc Bulger - St. Louis:  Same as Hasselbeck.  Marc is always an injury concern though.

Eli Manning - NYG:Â Eli will have some spectactular games, but will also have some stinkers.

David Garrard - Jacksonville:  Garrard isn’t a stat monster, but he is fairly consistant.  He will give you 1-3 TD’s and 200-300 yards a week.

Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay:  Finally gets his shot and has a loaded offense to work with.  Aaron will be looking over his shoulder a bit, in the end he gets the job done.

Philip Rivers - San Diego:  Knee is a bit of a concern.  If healthy, Rivers has enough weapons around him to put up solid #1 fantasy QB numbers.

Jay Cutler - Denver:  Diabetes diagnosis is a bit of a concern, as are the Brandon Marshall problems.  Cutler will find a way to show he is Denver’s next great QB.

Matt Schaub - Houston:  Schaub wins the starting job in the preseason.  Throwing to Andre Johnson automatically raises any QB’s value.

Jon Kitna - Detroit:  Detroit plays from behind a ton.  Kitna will see many chances each game to throw the ball.

Jake Delhomme - Carolina:  Coming back from Tommy John surgery, looks good so far.  Carolina would like to get 1 or 2 more years out of Jake so they can slowly develop Matt Moore.

Matt Leinart - Arizona:  Leinart gets his starting job back and has multiple weapons in the desert.  Leinart owners HAVE to also own Kurt Warner as an insurance policy.

Jeff Garcia - Tampa Bay:  The Bucs have a logjam at QB.  Garcia is the cream of the crop though.  Look for Garcia to get paid and start for Tampa Bay.

Vince Young - Tennessee:  The Titans really did nothing to help Vince in the draft.  While Vince has no worries about losing his job, he still doesn’t have much value as a fantasy QB.

Jason Campbell - Washington:  This is a make or break year for Campbell.  All the weapons are in place for him now.  Jason needs to produce or we will see Todd Collins.

Alex Smith - San Fran:  Alex Smith wins the starting job for the 49er’s.  Like Campbell, this is a make or break year for Smith though.

Kellen Clemens - NYJ:  Wins the Jets starting QB job based on his arm strength over Pennington.  Clemens will struggle throughout the season, but has some weapons that will bail him out from time to time.

Trent Edwards - Buffalo:  Added about 10 pounds of lean muscle in the off-season and is ready to lead this young Bills offense.  Edwards will look excellent at times, but will also make rookie mistakes at other times.
